Flau'jae Johnson stays loyal to LSU through four college seasons amid NIL, transfer portal era

Flau'jae Johnson, a guard for the LSU Tigers women's basketball team, has remained with the program throughout her college career, committing in November 2021 and enrolling ahead of the 2022-23 season.[1][2] The Savannah, Georgia native, a McDonald's All-American out of high school, contributed to LSU's 2023 NCAA Division I national championship as a freshman.[3]

Johnson's decision to stay at LSU defies the frequent transfers common in the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) era of college athletics. Coach Kim Mulkey, who has won four national titles including one at LSU in 2023, has praised Johnson's commitment.[4]

Johnson's bond with LSU extends beyond basketball. In 2023, she buried her beloved bearded dragon, named Four after her jersey number, on the Baton Rouge campus. She has another bearded dragon named Champ, which she considered bringing to practices and tournament games.[5]

A recording artist signed to Roc Nation, Johnson has balanced basketball with music and multiple NIL partnerships. She signed an NIL deal with the Unrivaled women's 3-on-3 league ahead of its 2025 inaugural season.[6]

Teammate Izzy Besselman has credited Johnson's work ethic for motivating the locker room. Johnson maintains a routine including film study and extra workouts, emphasizing efficiency and competing against top talent under Mulkey's coaching.[5]

Entering her senior season in 2025-26 with the Southeastern Conference powerhouses, Johnson aims to cap her Tigers career on a high note in postseason play.[1]
