Jets coach Aaron Glenn backs Geno Smith to end NFL's longest playoff drought

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn endorsed quarterback Geno Smith as the team's long-term solution at the position during the NFL's annual meeting in Arizona on Tuesday, describing him as "the guy that's going to lead us to the promised land."[1]

Smith, who was traded to the Jets from the Las Vegas Raiders, reportedly led the NFL in interceptions during the 2025 season with 17 picks while the Raiders went 2-7, including a 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos.[1]

The Jets have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season, the longest current drought among NFL teams.[2][3]

The team won three games in the 2025 regular season, according to reports.[1] Smith was previously traded to the Raiders after the 2024 season with the Seattle Seahawks, where he earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2023 and 2024.[4][5]

Glenn acknowledged Smith's "ups-and-downs," particularly his 17 interceptions with Las Vegas, but highlighted his arm talent, improved decision-making and suitability for the Jets' offense.[1]

Originally drafted by the Jets in the second round (No. 39 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia, Smith started 27 games over three seasons (2013-2015) in New York.[6][7]

In his rookie year, Smith threw for 3,049 yards, 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.[7] The following season, he recorded 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.[7] He missed time in 2015 after suffering a broken jaw in a preseason altercation with teammate IK Enemkpali.[6][8]
