Trump attends LIV Golf at Virginia club after urging PGA return
President Donald Trump attended the LIV Golf Virginia tournament at his Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C. in Sterling, Virginia, on May 9, 2026. The visit marked his second golf event in as many weeks, following the PGA Tour's Cadillac Championship at his Trump National Doral course the previous weekend.
Trump arrived by motorcade and took a golf cart to a presidential suite, where he shook hands with his son Eric Trump and a representative from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The event comes amid uncertainty for LIV Golf, which announced that the fund would cease backing after this season.
Last Thursday, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that LIV players returning to the PGA Tour would benefit golf. "I do believe that all of the golfers should be playing against each other," he said, naming Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler as examples of matchups fans want to see.
Trump has hosted LIV events at his courses before, with another scheduled for August at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. He also attended the opening day of last year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.
